Angel's Advocate
by Under No Illusion insooo.... i've been perusing recent topics for a few minutes and seeing pretty much the standard jw fare these days - scandals, abuse, bad behavior, cover ups, bullying, shunning, family splits, torturous extrications from a cult, mind control etc.. i started to try and think of anything the dubs were doing that was actually beneficial to mankind in any way, and i'm struggling.
without being facetious, wtf do they do to make anybody's life better?
help me out here.. pros.

You forgot, they also boosted Roku sales.
And I have it from a reliable source that their Caleb and Sophia animations were so professional that it impressed a prominent Pixar executive and that can only be done with God's spirit.

This is great, thanks for sharing. JWs DO use this scripture as a common proof text to say that Jesus commonly used the name Jehovah even though there is no record of it.

How did/do you address your fellow believers?
by JayDubyaDotOrg inevening all.. during today's midweek bore-athon my mind was wandering as usual, and i was doing some (oh the horror!
) thinking.. nothing screams 'cult' more to me than dubs calling each other brother.. "that was an excellent talk tonight brother anderson".. "brother jones, we really need to go in service together again soon".. is it just me using people's first name.. "hi john how's it going?
did you watch the match yesterday?

I call EVERYONE by their first names. Once in a big while a very elderly one might prefer the title, and so I call them that out of respect similar to Mr. and Mrs. - But most don't mind and they do the same with each other. It really irks me to see some of the JW Bible dramas where they have people saying "Brother Paul", "Brother Timothy" etc, as if that was a 'thing' back then.

Doctor Sleep
by Simon insaw the movie yesterday and, wow - it was good.. it's a follow-up to the shinning, an iconic movie, and it just has the same feel to it not least because some of it ends up set back at the same hotel and has the same kind of camera angles and scenes plus the haunting soundtrack.
it actually starts with the mom and the kid living after they survived the experience in the original movie.. it wasn't what i was expecting, i thought it was going to just be a cash-in, but it wasn't - not just more of the same, instead it actually built in the original and expanded on what 'the shinning' was.. if you like suspenseful movies but not just a gore-fest, i give it a thumbs up..

It was based on an actual book sequel by King, wasn't it? If so that's probably why it was good. If it was an original Hollywood sequel, it would've been highly derivative, nostalgic, going for the lowest-common-denominator etc.

Governments have no business telling people who they should or should not associate with.
The same is true of judicial committees. Of course individuals can still decide, but religious organizations shouldn't. The sooner governments start taking away financial incentives to "charitable" organizations that engage in this, the better.

Two types of congergatoions
by JimmyYoung ini am not say this is all and it all fits nice into this box but the congregations i went to would all fit into them.
the first type is the old school.
this type is very conservative old school.

I think you nailed it. Of course some are mixtures of the two, but from what I've seen the latter is the majority.

It's bittersweet in a way, but it's also heartwarming, and I thank God for giving him such serenity and courage in that moment. I'm shocked that he wasn't escorted off.

The latest JWdotORG experience starts very familiarly:
Danielle, one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in South Africa, found a bag that a customer had left behind in a coffee shop. Inside the bag was a wallet with money and credit cards.
When the owner met her to get it back,
he was greeted by Danielle and her father. They used the opportunity to tell him why they had gone to such lengths to find him. They explained that as Jehovah’s Witnesses, they try to live in harmony with Bible principles. That is why they are so concerned with always being honest.
We've heard this at conventions and in print for decades: Worldling loses valuable, JW returns it, JW uses the opportunity to give a JW infomercial, you know, like they do with funerals. Here's where it takes an interesting turn:
Some months later,
. . . he discovered a purse lying on the ground. When he found the woman who owned the purse and returned it to her, he explained what moved him to do so. He had recently been the recipient of a similar act of honesty. He said: “One small act of honesty and kindness leads to another, making life better for everyone in the community.”There's a phrase for this that has nothing to do with JWs: Paying It Forward. The man wasn't a JW, the next person who pays it forward probably won't be a JW, and the man would've felt the same way regardless of Danielle's religion. This is probably a foreign concept that went right over the writer's heads, but: You Do Not Have To Be A JW To Be A Good And Moral Person, and they just unknowingly demonstrated that.
